Tablets & eReaders: Information at Your Fingertips (1 day workshop in Tulsa for library/literacy staff/volunteers)

This class is designed to provide participants with hands-on learning opportunities using some of the most popular mobile devices including the iPad and Kindle e-reader.  The class includes discussion and hands-on activities. A mobile device 'petting zoo' will provide class attendees the opportunity to see & use some of the most popular tablet & e-reader device options.

Topics include:

  • the current state of the tablet & e-reader market;
  • basic features and differences in popular devices;
  • differences between mobile sites & mobile apps;
  • exploration of free resources for mobile devices available from the National Library of Medicine;
  • ways to use e-readers to provide access to resources;
  • downloading from OverDrive & other e-book vendors.

Emily Hurst, Technology Coordinator for the South Central Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine from Houston, will teach the class. There is no prerequisite for this class.

 If your library or literacy organization is 60 miles or more from Hardesty Regional Library, a travel stipend of up to $92/night for overnight stay may be available. (Stipend will be based on lodging receipt. If lodging charges are less than $92, the contract will be written for the actual amount, not $92.) Mileage also may be reimbursed at 30 cents/mile if you are paying for your own gas & cannot collect from your library/literacy organization. Stipend contracts will be made out to the library/literacy organization. It will be your responsibility to collect your reimbursement from such organization. No travel stipend contracts will be written until the class has been attended and photocopied proof of overnight stay (if applicable) has been submitted to the Office of Library Development.
